Blues Call on Core Strength

Blues Call on Core Strength

With two extra teams, three new programs and scores of emerging players ready to make their debut or build on their 2024 season, the variables going into this year’s WNWBL have rarely been greater.

As teams work on finding cohesion within brand new combinations, the Sydney Blues are focusing on their core group with a few high level additions to help them return to the top of the mountain.

Gliders players Jess Cronje, Georgia Munro-Cook, Maryanne Latu and Victoria Simpson have been working together throughout the off season and will once again form the nucleus of the Blues’ side.

“Having our four current gliders training on a regular basis through the year is a boost for the reintroduction of our interstate, international and trans Tasman team mates,” said Blues high pointer Jess Cronje.

London silver medalist Claire Nott returns to the national league as the only new player to the roster but the Gliders within the Blues team have all spent time with her on court in the past.

“Claire joining us will give us some variation on our combinations, knowledge that can be added to our repertoire and a great support to our core Blues members. She adds a different layer to our Blues base.”

In an even bigger boost, the Blues will be one of only two WNWBL teams with an import with three-time Paralympian Mari Amimoto from Japan returning to Australian shores.

“Mari is finishing up from her European campaign and will be here for our next training session. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with her on the Blues in 2023 when we won the national league and playing against her both nationally and internationally. She brings a wealth of experience and dedication to round out our Blues group.”

Also in the Blues high pointer ranks is Teisha Shadwell

“Teisha rejoining us is great. Her on court presence and skill set is something we look forward to returning to our mix after she came on board for our 2024 season.”

Under the guidance of Troy Sachs, the Blues are once again poised to be a championship contender.

“We want to get out there and play a good style of basketball as well as having fun while we do it. Teamwork and good communication with the team so we can all achieve our best results in 2025.“
